The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 8 September 2018 at the Avondale Islamic Centre.

New Zealand Nepal Society hosted its annual Teej Celebration 8 September 2018 in Auckland.  The vibrant event, celebrated with cultural performances and colourful decorations, was attended by community members, government agencies, and MPs.

Kia ora, nĭ hăo and namaste!

This month the Office of Ethnic Communities (OEC) celebrated Māori, Chinese, and Hindi language weeks.  We also observed the 125th anniversary of the New Zealand women’s suffrage movement, and saw the release of the report on Diverse Thinking Capability Audit in New Zealand Boardrooms 2018.  These events allowed us to learn and share the rich languages, history, and innovations that we have here in Aotearoa. 

Aga Khan Award for Architecture Exhibition celebrates innovation and diversity

An exhibition of projects honoured by one of the world’s most prestigious architecture awards has opened in Auckland. The George Fraser Gallery is exhibiting projects from the most recent round of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

In June 2017, the Government released the International Student Wellbeing Strategy designed to protect and enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for international students to study.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement. This month, we celebrate suffrage month, as we remember the signing of the petition that worked towards the passing of the Electoral Act 1893, giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote.

As a part of one of the Government’s key priorities, Hon Jenny Salesa, Minister for Ethnic Communities, announced that the Cabinet Appointments and Honours Committee has agreed that ethnicity data be collected for candidates appointed to State sector boards and committees.
