  • New Ethnic Communities Fund

    The Minister for Ethnic Communities Hon Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga announces a new Ethnic Communities fund.

    The Office of Ethnic Communities has replaced the Settling In fund with the Ethnic Communities Development Fund. This new fund will be open on 15 August and close on 27 September 2016. There will be one funding round a year.

  • Celebrating Everest Day

    The Minister for Ethnic Communities was unable to attend the Everest celebration in Christchurch on 29 May in person but greeted the Nepalese community via video message.

    The lead organiser for the event was the Non-resident Nepalese Association led by Dr Bohla Pradhan - who noted that the event was designed to remember the great achievement of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and the enduring bonds of friendship between our two countries.

    This month Office of Ethnic Communities attended the 17th annual Auckland International Cultural Festival held at Mount Roskill War Memorial Park. The Festival is a well-established key Auckland multicultural event organised by Auckland Council.

    Minister for Ethnic Communities, Hon Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga attended the festival and spoke about the value of celebrating and embracing cultural diversity.

    New Zealand is one of the most ethnically diverse nations in the OECD and is becoming even more so.  According to the latest census one quarter of people who call New Zealand home were born overseas.  300 ethnic groups were recorded in the last census.
