  • Race Relations Day Festival and Peace March in Wellington

    The Race Relations Day Festival and Peace March is coming to Wellington on 24 March. With world class and local performers descending on the capital to celebrate ethnic diversity and mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event is proudly supported through the Ethnic Communities Development Fund from the Office of Ethnic Communities.

    A distinctive array of New Year celebrations in our ethnic communities are now among the many traditions enjoyed in our wonderfully diverse country. These festivals and observances, held throughout the year, have become integral to our home-grown Kiwi custom and tradition.

    This is the time of the year when our thoughts focus on the excitement of holidays and time with our families and loved ones. It is also a time of contemplation, of what a New Year may bring, of resolve and change, and the determination to make 2018 the best year of our lives.

  • Ethnic Communities Development Fund - recipients announced

    The recipients of the Ethnic Communities Development Fund for the 2018 year have been announced. A total of 71 groups received a combined total of $520,000 from the Fund.

    Grants were awarded for activities related to social cohesion, leadership development and cultural events. We received 138 requests for funding, totalling about $2.6 million.

  • Welcoming Communities standard for New Zealand

    Around the world Kiwis are renowned for being friendly, hospitable and inclusive – qualities highlighted in a new two-year pilot programme titled Welcoming Communities. The Welcoming Communities Standard was launched on 12 December 2017.

  • A Journey of Interethnic Mothering in Aotearoa

    Interethnic Mothering is a topic dear to my heart academically and personally. My recently submitted Doctorial (PhD) thesis on this topic records experiences of migrant mothers in New Zealand and reveals interesting insights into their joys and challenges of parenting in an interethnic relationship.

    The Office of Ethnic Communities warmly welcomes our Minister, the Hon Jenny Salesa, and Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister for Ethnic Communities, Michael Wood MP. We will be supporting the Minister and Under-Secretary to deliver the Government’s priorities to ensure that ethnic diversity is a source of strength for New Zealand, and brings new insights, skills and opportunities to everyone in our society.

  • Population projections

    On 3 October 2017, Statistics New Zealand released an update of their population projections, which states that the four largest ethnic population groups in New Zealand are projected to grow between 2013 and 2038.

  • Justice promoting diversity in the workplace

    More than 200 people from Wellington’s Courts and Ministry of Justice offices got together on the 13 October and enjoyed an authentic Indian lunch to celebrate Diwali, the annual Hindu Festival of Lights.
