The Asia New Zealand Foundation has released a report, Losing Momentum – School Leavers’ Asia Engagement, which looks at New Zealand school leavers’ readiness for engaging with Asia. The report outlines the results of a survey of more than 1,000 senior school students and their level of Asia awareness. The questions asked were about cultural competencies and knowledge of Asia, and the perceived importance of Asia to New Zealand.

This is a good time of year to consider opportunities for governance roles. The Office of Ethnic Communities keeps a database of New Zealanders from ethnic communities who are suitably qualified to be considered for appointment to a number of government boards, committees and advisory groups. The nominations service seeks to increase ethnic representation in leadership and governance positions.

The month of June has flown by.  We paid tribute to the sheer courage and perseverance of refugees on World Refugee Day, 20 June.  As I began my work as Director of the Office of Ethnic Communities, old and new friends have made me aware of the significant difference that ethnic community representatives involved in business, migrant settlement, refugee services, culture and heritage, education and other important fields are making too many people's lives in Auckland and elsewhere.

  • Minister's Update - June 2017

I am looking forward to hosting the Parliamentary Eid ul-Fitr on 5 July and acknowledging the contributions made by Muslim Kiwis in New Zealand.

Eid ul-Fitr is a celebration of attaining spiritual prosperity after a month of fasting, worship and prayer. During this celebration, Muslims give thanks to Allah (God) for their health, wellbeing and for the strength to complete their spiritual fasting.
