Serving on a board

Public sector boards and committees oversee and undertake a number of important strategic functions.

The purpose of a board is to provide:

  • leadership
  • financial oversight
  • and strategic direction for the organisation.

Members of a board focus on the high-level planning for a business or entity. Rather than the day to day operations. The board must ensure that:

  • Finances are sound
  • Operations are legal
  • Procedures are working
  • Assets are safe
  • All tasks are carried out in the public interest
