EPIC NZ 2014 in Wellington inspires and informs

Chris Teeling, Global head of Strategy, Xero provided an inspiring story of growth and success

Wellington played host to its second EPIC NZ conference on 26 June 2014. Approximately 160 people enjoyed an opportunity to make new business connections and to listen to an inspiring line-up of speakers. The conference focussed on the potential in the city’s small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector and the day provided practical advice on how small businesses in New Zealand can ‘make it big’ at home and offshore.

The conference, which was sponsored by BNZ, focussed on Wellington's high-growth sectors including high-value manufacturing and digital technologies. Attendees were offered four key ways to expand their networks and businesses – franchising, support for start-ups, raising capital, and collaboration between Māori and Ethnic business communities.

A range of organisations providing services to the small-business community, including Inland Revenue, Ministry of Primary Industries, Creative HQ and Wellington City Council had information and stands at the conference.

Keynote speaker Chris Teeling, Global Head of Strategy for Xero, provided a model for success with his presentation of Xero’s story of growth from a start-up in a Wellington apartment to an international company with $100 million in annualised revenue. He told attendees “the golden age of small business is coming up in the next decade".

Attendees said they found the event both useful and inspiring with comments such as: "Very high standard event, including the great speakers, format and organisation" and "Having a combination of Kiwi and ethnic people in business as speakers is awesome” and "There was a great atmosphere for networking and plenty of opportunity for it."
