On 23 April, we attended the Race Relations Day celebration event in Wellington organised by the New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils (Multicultural New Zealand), in partnership with Multicultural Council of Wellington and the Human Rights Commission.

Race Relations Day (21 March) has been observed in New Zealand since 2003 and marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.  The date is the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa in 1960.

The event was well attended by members of the public and included speeches from the Governor-General, Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, His Worship Justin Lester, Mayor of Wellington, Dame Susan Devoy, Race Relations Commissioner, and representatives of Multicultural New Zealand and the New Zealand Police.
