The Office of Ethnic Communities was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Councillor Phillip Yeung on 29 September in Hamilton, aged 60.

Philip and his wife Alice moved to New Zealand from Hong Kong in 1996 with their daughter. At the time of his passing, Philip was serving his second term as the Hamilton City Council East Ward Councillor, having first been elected in 2013 when he became the city’s first ethnic Chinese elected member. Prior to this he worked as an Ethnic Communities Advisor for the Council. Phillip also assisted in launching the New Zealand Ethnic Football Festival in the early 2000s and had a long involvement with Indigo Trust. He became a justice of the peace in 2007 and was also the recipient of the Civic Award for services to the community.

Councillor Philip Yeung made a significant contribution to Hamilton, particularly to its ethnic communities, and will be remembered for his immense passion and selfless devotion to a city that he truly considered to be his home.
