On 20 March 2025, we hosted the second Regional Initiative for Ethnic Communities Empowerment (RIECE) forum in Hawke’s Bay. This event brought together stakeholders from Ethnic Communities and representatives from government agencies to discuss topics of importance to their communities.

The Mayor of Hastings welcomed guests and participants. Our Deputy Chief Executive, Malcolm Foo, started the event by highlighting the Ministry’s new approach and the collaborative efforts.

“Ethnic Communities are active around New Zealand, and we see them building their own capabilities to serve their communities better. The RIECE forums are designed to empower them in their efforts to help their communities.”

The event featured panel discussions on two key topics:

  • Community safety and family violence
  • Employment and migrant exploitation prevention.

The panel speakers shared their expertise and perspectives, while listening to the local insights and experiences shared by attendees on some confronting issues. This session provided a platform for exploring regional challenges and opportunities, and aimed to build understanding and trust between Ethnic Communities and government agencies.

Participants also shared their views on community safety, employment rights and emergency preparedness and recovery.

We extend our gratitude to the participating organisations and agencies that supported the event: Hastings District Council, Napier City Council, Welcoming Communities, Ministry of Social Development, Multicultural Association Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand Police, Inland Revenue, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Te Puna Aonui, and Eastern Bridge.

We plan to hold more RIECE events across New Zealand, continuing to build stronger connections between Ethnic Communities and government agencies. Follow us on social media for updates on upcoming events.
